If you are looking for a used compact luxury car, the Audi A4 is a great choice. Production began in 2008, so there are plenty of used A4s to buy. If you do choose to buy this great looking car, here are a few tips to help you to find the best quality one, for the right price.
Choose the Right Version
There are several versions of the A4 to choose from. The original was a saloon, which is great for most people. However, if you have a family or want to use the car for weekends away or have a hobby that requires you to travel with quite a bit of equipment then the Avant is the right version for you.
If you live somewhere remote then the 4WD Allroad is best. The newer versions have better fuel economy, so this is an important consideration; look a facelift model that was made after 2011. The styling on these is also more current, so if looks are important they are a good choice for you too.
The Right Engine and Gearbox
We already touched on fuel economy, but engine performance is another consideration. If you regularly drive long distances the 2.0 TDi engine is a good choice. The slightly more powerful ride makes it more comfortable on a long journey. The 1.8 TFSi is perfect for those who do a lot of their driving in town.
When it comes to transmission there is plenty of choice with the Audi A4. If you want an automatic, you can choose between a Multitronic, S Tronic or Tiptronic. The Quattro has its own unique transmission system.
Problems to look out for
The Audi A4 is an exceptionally reliable car with no real issues. You need to look for areas of high wear and tear, just as you would when buying any other used car. Pay particular attention to the electronics. A sticky electric window or other electrical component can sometimes be an early sign of failing electronics, something you do not want with a car, because problems with a car’s electrics are notoriously hard to solve and tend to multiply.
