The main beach is down by the harbour. It is clean, but pebbly. However, there is a long sweeping sandy beach close to Kalamata, called Messini, although the locals call it Bouka beach. It is set against the striking beauty of the Taygetus mountain range. The beach has everything you need including cafes, bars and showers. Other nice sandy beaches within easy reach of the city include Stoupa and Mikri Mantineia.
Enjoying the City
Large parts of the city are pedestrianised. It is easy for parents to sit down and enjoy a long cold drink whilst their kids play nearby in the cities many squares. It is the square where everyone meets to have a drink before fanning out across the city to eat a meal or take a stroll, so is always busy and has a great atmosphere.
Most of the restaurants in the city are very child friendly. The Greeks love children, so cater for them well. Aristomenos Square is a great example of this. If your family enjoy museums and art galleries there are some really nice ones here. The folklore museum is particularly interesting and the Archaeological Museum of Messinia is well worth a visit. In the summer, it can get hot, so the chance to spend a couple of hours in a cool museum is a welcome one. The Kalograion Monastery is another cool oasis, with an interesting history.
The Marina and the Port of Kalamata are both busy and full of unusual sights and sounds. A stroll around this area is very pleasant indeed.
The city also offers many shopping opportunities. On a Wednesday and a Saturday there is a great market held at the foot of the Kastro. It is all fresh produce, with villagers from the surrounding area coming to sell what they grow as well as regular traders.
