Wayfinding Signage

Whether out on the open road, in a public building or in a public attraction it is practically impossible to not come into contact with wayfinding signage. It refers to any visible sign which directs people to the correct terminus and often gives additional information such as the length of time it will take them to reach the destination along with details of specific interest such as National Trust details, picnic areas, en route hazards and irregular roads.

Manufacture

Signs are usually produced in accordance with local council legislation, especially when on the open highway. There is often directive that wherever possible attempts to utilise existing posts and poles with which to display the sign should be made. Signs are typically made from aluminium and have a reflective surface to make them more visible at night and in low visibility conditions.

Sign makers will often use a border and un-natural colouring such as black and red to set the sign apart from the local foliage and make sure that they are easily seen and the contents noted by a passing motorist or pedestrian.

When Signs are good

Having effective wayfinding signage can be absolutely essential. When used effectively on the open highway they can cut driving times, the likelihood of a driver getting lost and in turn can be vital in cutting out wasted carbon emissions. Whilst many road signages are universally recognised and covered by the Highway Code a local council has responsibility for the wayfinding signage but must adhere to national regulations.

In privately run and public environments the signage becomes the responsibility of the business owner or manager. Although the reasons for having effective signage are still just as valid they have more discretion when deciding upon signage, how it should be worded and how and where it should be displayed.

When Signs go bad

Ineffective and bad signs become the stuff of legend very quickly with tabloid features dedicated to bad, poorly worded or badly translated signs frequently popping up for ridicule. If nothing else getting the right signage is essential for reputation purposes!
