Industrial Flooring

When considering which type of flooring is most appropriate for any industrial environment it is firstly important to consider the type of industry, the needs of the floor and the space and budget involved.

What is Industrial?

Whilst the term “industrial” might be an umbrella term which can covers all manner of workplaces the flooring which should and many cases must be used is anything but uniform. As different industries are governed by separate Health and Safety regulations the floors which may be used will vary dramatically and similarly if the floors are likely to be accessed by the public as well as personnel. Other considerations are the amount of walking or movement which is likely to take place on the floor, the presence of any heavy machinery which might have vibrations which would damage some floors making them hazardous and the involvement of any erratic temperature levels, for example if a product needed to be heated or cooled to extreme temperatures.

The Different Floor Solutions

There are many flooring types which can be referred to as industrial and the manufacturers, suppliers and installers will usually specialise in one specific type rather than having a broad knowledge of each. Some, for example might specialise in high sheen Terazzo flooring which is the glass-like surface which is often seen in airports and shopping plazas. Further examples of specialist flooring are PVC tiles which are often fitted into factories as they are easily cleaned and one tile can be replaced if damaged (which is possible with much foot traffic and machinery) and also non slip vinyl which is especially useful when used in areas of the public as there is little scope for damage done if the floor becomes wet or hazardous.

Health and Safety

Any member of the public has a duty under Health and Safety legislation to pay a duty of care to their and other peoples’ health and safety and in addition there are further duties to business owners who can be held liable for any damage which is done to person or property by either their negligence or the negligence of any contractor they employed. For this reason it is especially important for flooring installers to be qualified, experienced and insured to do their job.
