5 Useful Things You Don’t Need to Buy

1. Carpet cleaners. Those steam things that lift stains out of your carpet and return it to its original colour rather than that darker grubbier version it’s gradually acquired over the years. You only need to do this once in a blue moon and no-one buys their own carpet cleaner, you rent them from some sort of DIY store, but they’re really useful for making your house look newer and shinier.

2. Skips. Fairly self-explanatory really. You only need to use them when you’re doing a big clear out or renovation. So you hire one from a skip company.

3. Which leads us on to tools for DIY projects such as a renovation or refurb. Some jobs will need specialist equipment to cut certain materials or prepare surfaces, and you don’t need to buy these. If you’re building an extension, annexe or even a new home you will definitely need to hire site equipment, particularly for specialist things, like from If you’re doing any sort of DIY or building which require elevated work or heights, you will need to pick your equipment carefully.

4. Printers. Unless you have your own business from home or work freelance, the chances of you actually needing your own printer these days are slim. Internet enabled mobiles and clever apps mean that even things like booking confirmations and vouchers which you might have once printed can now be stored electronically. On the rare occasions you need to print something it’s easy enough to save to a memory stick and find an internet café or shop that will let you print (some estate agents even have computers and printers you can use) or just sneakily use your work printer. The minimal amount of printing that most people do means that these devices are becoming less cost-effective and to be honest they can be such an unreliable pain most people will be happy banishing them from their home.

5. Music and films. Bit of a controversial one this. Some people still insist that physical hard copies such as DVDs/Blue-Rays and CDs shouldn’t die as they are great to own, we are relying more and more on electronic versions of these media. While there are devices that allow you to own the digital version yourself (such as iTunes and eBook readers) subscription based streaming services are hugely popular. They don’t require you to have a large amount of memory and you don’t need to commit to buying an album or film so you have more choice and flexibility. By paying monthly to access a library, or paying nothing and putting up with adverts, you can be more experimental in what you consume as it won’t cost you extra.
