Waterproofing Basement

There are many factors to consider when constructing a property. Not all will include what we traditionally think of as being a basement but, if you are fortunate enough, to have basement space then you need to ensure that it is fully protected from damp and moisture, both of which can become a major problem for a property. Initially they can lead to a funny smell and a colder atmosphere but left unchecked they can cause major structural problems within a building and they can lead to massive repair bills for your home.

Damp is usually first spotted when damp spots appear on the walls. If you don’t go down into the basement often, though, these early signs can be missed so do ensure that you regularly pop down and take a look. Also remember your other senses because if the damp spot is hidden it is likely to be the musty smell that first leads to you noticing the problem.

The early signs of damp are these visible damp spots and the smell. The smell actually comes from mould and mildew that is formed on and in the walls and these create tiny spores that are released into the atmosphere. The spores can be inhaled when breathing and, if somebody in your home suffers from allergies or has breathing difficulties, it can lead to serious consequences.

The longer the damp spots are left, the greater the damage they will do to your property. The damp continues to travel through the bricks and the wall of your home and as the mortar in the brickwork gets wet it can shrink or expand causing cracks to appear. What start as small cracks can become a lot bigger and this may lead to major structural damage to your property. In the most extreme circumstances it could be necessary to have the walls rebuilt.

When it comes to waterproofing, basement rooms should be considered one of your priorities. The first signs of damp may appear here and this means that it could be the cause of your problems. If in doubt call an expert and have them assess the problem for you.
