Office safes can not only protect your business’s assets – they may also help to protect the environment.
It might sound like an unusual notion, but the government says it has an “ongoing interest” in finding better ways to account for carbon emissions created due to crime.
For instance, any manufacture or movement of goods can be linked with carbon emissions – and thefts from commercial premises will inevitably lead to new items being created and shipped in order to replace those that have been stolen.
The Home Office has now launched a new collaboration with the University of Surrey and the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Secured by Design Crime Prevention Initiatives in order to calculate exactly how crime impacts the environment.
Secured by Design in particular has already worked to compile statistics about how crime and the environment are linked – and estimates the annual carbon footprint of crime to be equivalent to 6.5 million tonnes, with 1 million of this associated with crimes that go unreported.
If you include carbon emissions from, for example, people who drive because they are afraid to be on foot in certain areas, or people who move house because they have been victims of crime, the total footprint is closer to 12 million tonnes.
This is 2% of the UK’s total carbon emissions per year, making crime a reasonable focus for anyone looking to help the climate.
But of course, it’s not solely the environment that’s a cause for concern, and office safes can make good financial sense too.
In Home Office guidance published on the Secured by Design website, fire-proof office safes are suggested as a way of keeping sensitive documents protected in the event of an arson attack or accidental blaze, as a legitimate alternative to off-site backup processes.
The guidance also suggests making it clear that staff cannot access the contents of the safe, in order to further deter any would-be burglars from attempting daylight robbery.
