Industrial gas is a term given to various types or organic and inorganic gases that are used in the industrial manufacturing process. Some of the most common processes include steel, chemical and medical manufacturing, oil refinery, food processing and water treatments.
There are six major types of common industrial gases: air, air gases, noble gases, elemental gases, compound gases and hydrocarbon cases. Air gases are nitrogen and oxygen. Noble gases include helium, argon, krypton, neon and xenon. Elemental gases are hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine. The compound gases are ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride, nitrous oxide, nitrogen trifluoride, sulfur dioxide and sulfur hexafluoride. While methane, acetylene, ethane, ethene, propane propene, butane and butene make up the most commonly used hydrocarbon gases.
These gases come in different states including liquid, compressed gases or solids. Industrial gases that are capable of being transported in liquid form are liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen and liquified petroleum gas. Liquified natural gas, also known as LNG, is also in liquid form and it is a popular industrial gas used when it needs to be transported long distances. Some of these gases are singular, while others are a combination of several gases.
The medical industry also relies heavily on industrial gases. Oxygen is frequently used in hospitals while other gases are required in surgical procedures. Industrial gases can also be used to treat and purify water to provide clean and safe drinking water.
Distribution of industrial gases is most commonly by pipelines that are already installed in a large countries infrastructure. Industrial gas can also be transported by bulk transportation, such as freight trains, lorries and ships, if they require international distribution.
Some of the largest companies within the industrial gas business are AGA, Airgas, BASF, BOC, Messer Group, National Oxygen PTE and Praxair. However many smaller companies import and use industrial gases in smaller quantities.
Industrial gases play a vital part in the manufacturing process, without them many medical, food and structural industries would not be able to function properly. Many companies are also investing in finding and using sustainable energy resources to make less of a detrimental impact on the environment.
