There is a multitude of choices that can now be made in terms of flooring for home, office and commercial premises.
Domestic
Since the 1960’s fitted carpet has been a fixture in many homes but there has been a move to wooden floors of late and these are now being fitted in new houses as well as being restored in houses were they have previously been covered up. These wooden floors can be parquet, block flooring or just plain floorboards that are skimmed and then polished. They look splendid when professionally laid but they do need some protection in some areas and thus rugs are now a significant part of the flooring market. They can be modern or traditional and will be laid in the centre of the room or will be strategically placed under items of furniture such as coffee tables to ensure that when in use they are not liable to slide all over the floor.
Fitted carpet does of course still have an important part to play and many people still prefer this in bedrooms.
Kitchens and bathrooms may have ceramic tiles laid as these are able to be kept clean and will not be pervious to water. They can of course also accommodate under floor heating. In kitchens that are of the cottage type and Victorian type there can also be a demand for granite or slate flooring.
Commercial
There is now a call for resin floors in manufacturing areas as well as in canteens and distribution depots. They are hard wearing and durable and can be colour coded so that you can lay out areas of use and storage as needed.
In offices carpet is still in use but it is not always the best choice as it will have areas of heavy wear as well as being liable to movement as filing cabinets in wheels are dragged along the floor. In these areas heavy-duty carpet tiles are a better option as they can be moved around so that wear can be kept even and they can be scrubbed clean if necessary.
