Why is the MOT all About?
MOT testing is a way in which the government can ensure that all cars used on the roads meet safety and environmental requirements. You need an MOT certificate in order for you to renew your road tax and many insurance companies will also want to see this document. This means that in order to drive your modern car legally on the roads you will need to get annual MOT testing carried out.
What Happens with MOT testing?
When your car undergoes an MOT inspection the qualified mechanic will check a number of factors including:
General condition of important safety features such brakes, tyres, lights, washers, horn, seat belts and more.
General conditions of exhaust system to ensure levels of emissions meet minimum standards.
General condition of bodywork and any modifications to the car.
General condition of steering and suspension.
General condition of fuel system (pipes, hoses, fuel cap and seals).
MOT Testing
If your car fails an MOT then you will need to get any work carried out and submit your car for re-testing. You will only have a certain amount of time to do this so you will need to be organised. If you are caught driving without a valid MOT testing certificate then you could an on-the-spot fine (typically £60) or a court fine (maximum of £1,000).
You must remember that MOT testing is not an in-depth service of your car. All this inspection will check for is that your car meets minimum safety and emissions targets. If you do have an MOT certificate this does not mean your car is guaranteed to be in full working order. You still need to invest in proper vehicle servicing to maintain and check the mechanical workings of your car.
