Flightsuits are articles of clothing which have been especially designed to be worn in-flight. They have been designed with the rigors and strains of a flight in mind and this means that they are the perfect clothing to be worn by pilots both commercially and in the military. They are also worn by astronauts on their missions to space too – that is how good they are. The first flight suits were made up of several different parts but this proved to be impractical and the flight suits which are used now are one piece garments, commonly known as jumpsuits of coveralls.
The History Of Flightsuits
Flightsuits have actually been around since World War I where they were designed to ensure that fighter pilots were warm and comfortable no matter what the outside conditions might be. The first flight suits were actually made from leather and came in two pieces, so they were very different from the flight suits of today.
As World War II came into full force, military pilots had to reach altitudes of 3,000 feet or more and this meant that keeping warm whilst in-flight was becoming a real problem. This led to the invention of electrically heated flight suits. However, with the advent of pressurised cabins, these quickly became obsolete and flight suits were again redesigned to be more lightweight and dynamic.
Jet Engines
Jet engines posed a new problem for the makers of flight suits. The early jet engines posed a real risk of fire and this meant that flight suits needed to be fire retardant in order to further protect pilots.
New flight suits were also made in order to help pilots remain conscious and alert when they carried out difficult maneuvers. These worked by compressing the body. There are even fully pressurised flight suits available to some pilots who are working at extreme altitudes.
Modern Flightsuits
Modern flight suits are typically made from NOMEX which is a very lightweight material made up mostly of nylon. It is very flexible and light, allowing for ultimate comfort. They also tend to feature several zips and pockets which make it easy to store essential items on the person without the threat of them being lost in extreme maneuvers.
