The name comes from the fact that the roots of the plant are compacted together and are still in the shape of the cell or plug in which they have been grown. They are a great way of buying plants, firstly, they are, generally speaking, far cheaper than plants that have already been potted on. In addition, the fact they are so compact means that they are far easier to transport. If you are not going far they can even be placed carefully in a carrier bag and put into the footwell of your car.

If you go somewhere where you can choose your own plants buy those that look the healthiest. If the plug is dried out or the plant has broken or dried leaves on it avoid buying those. However, even in this situation most plants will recover because they are usually young enough.

You can buy them from many High Street outlets. If you want really cheap ones you can even buy them a boot sales or markets. However, buying them online offers the best value for money.
